What's the rule

So Facebook has been an internet juggernaut for a few years now.  It's organized, nice, there is structure but what are the rules man?  In the good old days stalking was done with binoculars from a distance or from tree branches outside ones window or the occasional I know he lives with his parents and they live at this address so I'll just drive by and see if he's there... several times a night...  But Facebook brings it to a whole new level.  You don't even know you are being "supervised" which is probably a good thing.

Imagine how paranoid you'd get if you saw some page view counter go up by the hundreds daily (unless something like that feeds your ego in which case, carry on carry on) or if you could see that Mary Sue viewed your page 30x before breakfast.  Or that Darius's status revolved around your status...  (don't get me started on how stupid status' are and that ridiculous Twitter website).  It'd be some creepy sh*t, right?

Yes they have the privacy feature, which is great and strongly recommended.  You put all this personal information about yourself up and pictures of lord knows what and then comments from your friends...  Kind of vulnerable aren't you?  Say a future or current employer were to check it out or a co-worker or that guy you've been wanting to get with.  Sure you can just not friend them but that's kind of f'ed up right?

Okay so you've got your privacy settings the way you like them and you've got 1000+ friends, do you really care about them all though?  Do you know them?  "Do they call you at home?  Do you have dorsal fin?!"  Do you do anything other than the yearly birthday message for most of them?  Oh you look at their albums...

You can see who's gained tons of weight and who was a late bloomer.  Who's life hasn't changed, who's life has changed, who lives in the past, who wants to live in the past (me, 1955 Hill Valley please) Who's marriage is a power thing, who's is a facade, who thinks there child is cuter than they really are, who's more vain than Clarby, etc.  But what's the rule on commenting?...  Sure with people you stay in touch with there is no problem at all.  But what about the friend you had a falling out with or the lover that mistreated you?  Is it flattering or cause for concern?  What if you delete their comment?

Clarby's just saying, protect yourself, don't be a fool wrap your tool.
