Forced Religion

Yes that will work...

I heard a man talking about how he was going to have a "come to Jesus" meeting with his son yesterday.  I wasn't exactly sure what that meant, but it sounded like if his son didn't stop acting like a teenager he was going to be in for an ass kicking.  So I was trying to get it straight in my head.  He wants his son to be a good boy and follow the peaceful way of life that the teachings of Jesus tell us and if he doesn't then his dad will become violent?  Anyone else see the hypocrisy there?  Be like Jesus or get your hide tanned...  Oh yes dad, forced religion and threats of a beating will surely make him come to the light.  I love parents like this.

Staying with religion, while visiting my friend in the hospital yesterday we were greeted by the Hospital Chaplain.  I'm not about to rip him so relax.  This man was very positive, very positive and was so happy that my friend was surrounded by so many dear friends and family.  However he asked the following question, "so what brings you here today?"  He had no fear when he asked it.  Thankfully my friend was in much better spirits than the previous day or that poor preacher might have found a new religion and learned some new words.

I can't help but wonder how many times that question brings the wrath of some pain stricken patient.  I mean, you are in a hospital so you are in pain, the beds aren't comfortable, you are wearing a piece of cloth that covers nothing and keeps nothing warm, you rarely get to eat, you are hooked up to all sorts of machines and in a nice I'm curious like George or a cat voice, "What brings you here today?" is uttered?  Umm well you know Rev. can I call you Rev. I was thinking to myself, God wouldn't it be great to miss work, have a bunch of tests run on me, cause my friends and family to worry endlessly about me and watch some great basic television at a horrible angle all while lying on my back for a few days?  So I followed through on the notion and that's what brought me here.  Might I ask you kind sir, Rev. what brings you here today?  Like why did you want to come speak with me?

I think the hospital Chaplains are great, but I wouldn't be able to take the verbal bashings they must get from that question.

So Josh Hamilton?  How do people not love baseball?  Seriously, I'm a die hard Red Sox fan and last night's homerun derby at Yankee Stadium was one of the most amazing spectacles I've ever seen.  It ranked up there with Pedro in 1999, probably better.  I mean Yankee Stadium, as a Red Sox fan there would be no other stadium I'd want people to chant my name.  I seriously felt like I was reading the Natural and Roy Hobbs captivated the crowds before finally striking out.  Sure I wanted him to win, it would add to the fairytale season/life he is living but I think I like it better this way.  To see 50,000 plus fans cheering for this guy because he was hitting moonshots and bringing joy to so many and leaving so many in awe.  How many fathers and sons do you think will work on there swing or play catch or talk about their dads favorite player growing up because of his display of power last night.  But moreso his display of humility and humanity?  His promise to a dear 71 year old friend.  It was everything that is great about baseball, why the sport brings generations together.  And at the same the human element has never been more evident.  Here was a former number 1 pick who almost lost everything to drug and alcohol addictions but found faith in something and took it upon himself to turn his life around and last night was the culmination/coming out party for him.  It was truly awesome.
